Nakhlistan is a Persian word that means an ‘oasis’. Just like an oasis provide sustenance in the desert, likewise Nakhlistan assist the less fortunate within our community. The assistance is manifested through Soup Kitchens, Feeding Schemes, Ramadaan Fitrah Parcels, Iftaar to the Underprivileged, Monthly Necessities Distributed to Needy Families, and Eid-ul-Fitr Feeding Scheme (now extended to Eid-ul-Adha and Muharram).
This is in addition to providing an efficient Janaazah/Burial Service, establishing Jama’at Khanas and hosting Moulood-un-Nabi Programmes.
Nakhlistan was founded 27 years ago by a group of friends, namely the late Dawood Parker, Sadullah Khan and Shukoor Mowzer and has flourished with the inspiration of the late Imam Ebrahim Davids [Sep]. On the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr 1984, when they, with a group of friends, decided to cook two pots of food to be distributed to the poor and needy for the day of Eid.
Twenty seven years down the line, Nakhlistan has become a household name, synonymous with caring for the needy and cooking of huge pots of food for distribution amongst the less fortunate. On Eid-ul-Fitr 2010 over 75 000 cooked meals were directly distributed to underprivileged people. Furthermore, when disaster strikes, albeit natural [tornado or floods] or social [xenophobic attacks] Nakhlistan responds to the need of the time and assist wherever and whenever needed. Nakhlistan is organic in nature, growing with the community, serving as a trusted and reliable avenue for channeling assistance to those in dire straits.
Nakhlistan is not state funded and is solely dependent on financial support from the community. It has been through the generosity of the community that Nakhlistan has been able to run all these activities. Assist Nakhlistan help the poor and the needy.
Modesty and faith are surely bound together; if one is removed the other vanishes too. [Haakim]
